SUPPORT FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED LEARNERS

SD42 MAPLE RIDGE – PITT MEADOWS

DISTRICT HELPING TEACHER ROLE: [0.40FTE W/Th/F]

 

Provides information and facilitates networking

  • Organizes formal and informal in-service opportunities around

characteristics/traits/behaviours of gifted learners

  • Raises awareness about intellectual and socio-emotional aspects of giftedness
  • Facilitates professional development around strategies for supporting gifted

students in the classroom

  • Liaises among gifted contact teachers at each school, support teachers,

classroom teachers, administrators, school psychologists and other district personnel

 

Provides assistance to support teachers

  • Supports development of appropriate IEP’s for gifted learners
  • Provides consultation to identify appropriate curricular adaptations
  • Provides information about needs of twice-exceptional students (e.g. gifted LD)
  • Clarifies processes for screening, testing, and coding students as gifted
  • Attends school-based team meetings upon request

 

Provides coaching to classroom teachers

  • Helps teachers to recognize gifted behaviours/learners
  • Recommends, models, and supports the use of curriculum differentiation

strategies that benefit all students while meeting the needs of gifted learners

  • Visits classrooms to observe/offer feedback on use of strategies
  • Responds to questions or requests for information/resources

 

Provides access to resources

  • Identifies and recommends useful websites/books/articles/teaching resources

for teachers, parents, administrators

  • Recommends books/websites/other resources for student use
  • Highlights upcoming conferences/learning opportunities
  • Facilitates student participation in local and/or district contests/challenge

activities

 

Provides community liaison

  • Represents District 42 at the Lower Mainland Gifted Contacts network
  • Works with colleagues in other districts and considers parent/student

feedback to evaluate and update service models

  • Participates in gifted education professional/research/parent groups
  • Attends and distributes highlights of gifted education conferences
